Hello! My name is Edy Hariyanto. I was born, and now live and teach in historic and cultural Jogjakarta, central Java, Indonesia.
Jogjakarta is also spelled Yogyakarta, or Yogya/Jogja for short.
I have been working as a professional masseur and teacher since 1989. My background is in traditional Javanese massage, the
techniques of which are only passed down within families from generation to generation. Later, I learnt acupressure using
the fingers to unblock meridiens, which I now include in my course for a fuller, more therapeutic massage experience.
Most massage traditions are more or less based on the philosophy that there is no such thing as sickness or disease, only
"imbalance" or "disharmony" in the human body. In massage, we don't use the clinical approach or give treatment to symptoms.
Instead we aim to bring back balance, by revitalising the energy system, stimulating the vital points or promoting better
blood circulation.
I offer full-day three-day or five-day private massage classes in my family home in Jogjakarta, or in your guest house or
hotel. This massage course is suitable for both trained massage therapists of other traditions, or complete beginners. It
is at least 85% 'hands-on' full body practice by the student (not to mention the use of one's forehead, elbows, knees, etc),
so there won't be much time for taking notes with pen and paper!
The cost is very reasonable at US$35 per day of instruction, which includes the hire of live models and if training at my
house, simple but delicious local family lunch and refreshments prepared by my wife, Lun. It is a also a good chance for you
to witness some semi-rural local life in my neighbourhood only 10 minutes' ride from the Prawirotaman tourist area of Jogja.
This course can easily be combined to make a memorable and rewarding holiday with a difference in central Java. The most famous
sights of this area are the nearby great Buddhist monument of Borobodur, the Hindu ruins of Prambanan, the active volcano
Mount Merapi, the cities of Jogjakarta of course and Solo, both centres of traditional shadow puppetry, haunting brass gamelan
orchestral music, old palace life and other cultural highlights. Jogjakarta has many lovely, atmospheric, clean and comfortable
budget guest houses, as well as international hotels.
A reasonable amount of personal physical fitness is advised as my classes can be quite rigorous. Please have a look at the
photos on the rest of my website here. I will teach you to use your WHOLE body as a massage tool!
Telephone communication is preferred as I do not have regular online access. It is suggested you use the Skype programme from
the website of that name to make inexpensive calls from your computer from anywhere in the world.
Many thanks and I look forward with great pleasure to hearing from you soon.
